Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced it will expand the mobile telephone service coverage to 292 towns throughout the country in a bid to close the existing digital gap.
Two of the largest operators in Peru will provide mobile phone service where this is scarce, in favor of 87,204 inhabitants across 18 regions.
This way, America Movil Peru will serve 126 towns and Telefonica del Peru other 166; bringing more people together and fostering development in the country.
"Increased services will bridge the gap of those living in rural areas, promoting their socio-economic development and growth in all its forms. It is important to work aligned with civil society, the academy, the private sector and, of course, the State in order to close such gap," Deputy Communications Minister Carlos Valdez said.
Beneficiaries reside in Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Junin, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martin and Ucayali regions.
This expansion will enable inland users to enjoy high-speed data transfer and higher bandwidth (up to 384 kbps). Also, it will allow video conference calls, since the speed will be seven times higher than the standard.
Cell phones can be used as mobile offices in order to receive and send messages through an email app.
"3G technology will benefit 100,000 people, who will find favorable situations for the development of educational and economic activities," Valdez concluded.
