A team from Sapienza University in Rome (Italy) will arrive in Peru soon to conduct scientific research on pollution sources and impacts in the inner bay of Lake Titicaca.

According to Puno Province Mayor Ivan Flores Quispe, the Italian delegation will be joined by Altiplano University professionals.

"We need to repair and restore every ecosystem in Puno Bay," the provincial authority said upon his return from Europe.

Peruvian Embassy in Rome got in touch with Sapienza University scientists, thus making arrangements for their upcoming visit to Puno.

The research is intended to identify pollution sources and impacts on ecosystems across critical areas, including Puno Bay and Coata River.

Pollution is high in both cases, due to wastewater and solid waste disposals —main sources of contamination at Lake Titicaca.

Lake Titicaca has a surface area of 8,562 square kilometers and is 3,812 meters above sea level, thus making it the highest navigable body of water in the globe and South America's largest lake.
