First Vice-President arrives in Peru to assume Presidency

Amid high expectations, First Vice-President Martin Vizcarra landed in Lima from Toronto on Friday at 12:47 AM (local time) to be sworn in as President of the Republic of Peru later today.

Vizcarra will replace Pedro Pablo Kuczynski following the 79-year-old economist's resignation as Head of State of the Inca nation.

Previously, the 55-year-old politician had been serving as Peruvian Ambassador to Canada based in Ottawa.

Thus, the former Moquegua Region Governor will face one of the toughest challenges of his political career.

As is known, President Kuczynski announced his resignation in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday afternoon.

The announcement came after the opposition alleged that the embattled President's allies were trying to buy votes ahead of a second impeachment motion trying to oust him from office.

The Prosecutor's Office currently investigates Pedro Pablo Kuczynski over alleged payments by Brazilian construction company Odebrecht to Westfield Capital and First Capital, both linked to the resigning Head of State.

Kuczynski took office on July 28, 2016, and was supposed to serve for a five-year term.
