The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Peruvian State-run entities held a national dialogue to discuss the country's challenges in eradicating hunger and poverty, plus they addressed the nation's potential contributions to the region.
The event featured representatives of agriculture, environment, production, development, and social inclusion sectors, as well as FAO members.
Besides, they underlined FAO supported the National Food and Nutrition Center (Cenan) in the design process of the
food-based dietary guidelines in 2017.
"But the major challenge begins with the implementation of these guidelines and with what should be a massive campaign for healthy eating, of urgent execution," FAO representative Maria Elena Rojas noted.
The latter has two main objectives. First, it aims to provide public school students with all the required nutrients according to their local consumption habits, ages and environment; and —secondly— to promote better eating habits.
"We have made progress with pilot programs articulated with the [Development and Social Inclusion Ministry] MIDIS, which have already allowed us to generate some important evidences," Rojas expressed.
"However, the
35th Regional Conference is clearly the ideal platform to learn about the best practices of countries and draw the attention to the remaining challenges on this matter," she concluded.
