Chilean President Michelle Bachelet supported the position of Peruvian counterpart Pedro Pablo Kuczynski regarding protectionism, free trade and regional integration.

Speaking from the National Meeting of Private Enterprise (ENADE) in Santiago, the Chilean leader said protectionism is not good for Chile, Peru or the world.

As for the bilateral relation, she disclosed Peru and Chile decided to make a great leap forward during the official visit paid by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

“This [the visit] was a chance to reaffirm our commitment to trade openness, an opportunity to strengthen our bilateral ties and regional integration. We are firmly convinced protectionism is not good for Chile, Peru or the world,” she stated.

Bachelet noted the path for bilateral relations has been improved, leading to higher growth and better job opportunities.

“It allowed us to promote further growth, generate high-quality employment, develop our production matrix and build inclusive, proper societies,” she pointed out.

Likewise, she noted Peru’s attempt to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and offered full support through the sharing of experiences.

“I have always described the OECD not as “the club of rich countries”, but as a “club of best practices,” she added.
