Peru’s Chicama beach hosts South American Surf Championship

The beach of Chicama located in the northern region of La Libertad in Peru, which has the longest left wave in the world, will host the 2025 South American Surf Championship – Rázuri Centennial Cup, which will take place from today, Tuesday, May 6, until Sunday, May 11.

In this sport contest, participate members of the Athlete Support Program (PAD) of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD).

Located about 70 km north of Trujillo, the left wave of Chicama is world-famous for its length, reaching almost 4 kilometers of ride.

In this venue, ‘Piccolo’ Clemente and María Fernanda Reyes —who last week won the bronze medal at the ISA World Longboard Championship— will compete in the longboard category.

In the Open SUP Surf category, Vania Torres and Tamil Martino will participate, while in Open SUP Race, Giannisa Vecco, Camila Murguía, Itzel Delgado, and Rodrigo Alonso will represent us.

In Open Surf, Melanie Giunta, Catalina Zariquey, Raúl Ríos, and Gabriel Vargas will compete, while in Bodyboard, Hannah Saavedra and Cristóbal Dávila will participate.


A junior team with 12 surfers will also be present: Emma García (Under-12), Antonella Caballero (Under-12), Jaco Valdivieso (Under-12), Tadeo de la Fuente (Under-12), Aissa Chuman (Under-14), Valentina Escudero (Under-14).

Also, Facundo Castañeda (Under-14), Lorenzo de Osma (Under-14), Sofía Artieda (Under-16), Brianna Barthelmess (Under-16), Pol Huguet (Under-16), Bastian Arévalo (Under-16), Urpi Torres (Under-18), Camila Sanday (Under-18), Marcelo Huamán (Under-18), and Adrián de Osma (Under-18).

This tournament has the support of the IPD, which, in coordination with the National Surfing Sports Federation (Fenta), has been working toward the consolidation of this sport in the country with a view to the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
