Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo highlighted the importance of Machu Picchu in fostering tourism recovery in Peru.

Remarks were made on Sunday when commemorating the 17th anniversary of its election as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

"Tourism is an economic, social, and environmental engine for sustainable development in Peru. Machu Picchu is our primary and most visited tourist destination, renowned for its immense beauty and history, which makes us globally representative. Moreover, it is the only Wonder of the World certified as Carbon Neutral," Galdo highlighted.

In this regard, she indicated that the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry has been undertaking efforts to achieve increasingly better results and the arrival of more visitors, with a 360-degree perspective, always involving work with public and private sectors.

According to information provided by the Decentralized Culture Directorate in Cusco (DDC Cusco), the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu welcomed more than 17 million domestic and foreign visitors during 2007 and 2023.

These visitor figures include the Inka City of Machu Picchu, Piscacucho Inka Trail (Km. 82), Qorywayrachina Inka Trail (Km. 88), and Chachabamba Inka Trail (Km. 104).

As is known, our Inca Citadel is included in this list as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World along with the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the City of Petra, the Roman Colosseum, among others.

A few days ago, this wonder managed to once again win important recognition at the World Travel Awards South America 2024, as South America's Leading Tourist Attraction 2024. It is the seventh time that our wonder has obtained the coveted award in its category.

About Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca citadel nestled in a mountain.

Machu Picchu hosts temples, platforms, and water channels. It was built with large stone blocks joined together, without using amalgam.

It was declared a Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO by being recognized as an important political, religious, and administrative center of the Inca era.

Its name means "Old Mountain." Machu Picchu has also been called the ''Lost City of the Incas'' because it had been a mystery until it was discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911.
