Peru will seek to materialize negotiations with Morocco and UAE

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo highlighted the Address to the Nation delivered by President Dina Boluarte on July 28, when she underscored the progress that Peru has been making on its integration with the world through international trade agreements.

"To open more markets for our products and services, it has been announced that over the past year we achieved substantial completion of the optimization of the trade agreement with China, as well as substantial completion of negotiations with Hong Kong, which will enable us to consolidate zero tariffs for our products," Galdo explained.

Peru currently has 22 trade agreements in force with 58 countries, including China and the United States, which are our main trading partners.

The government official indicated that 91% of Peruvian exports are directed towards markets with which there is a trade agreement in force.

"Our extensive network of FTAs covers 82% of global GDP and 42% of the world's population. Shipments to China alone, our largest trading partner, account for 36% of Peru's exports worldwide," she noted.

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) is also seeking to establish new negotiations with African and Arab countries, such as Morocco and the United Arab Emirates, the latter of which is a market hosting 9.4 million potential consumers.

"We could provide our main non-traditional products, such as avocados, pomegranates, coffee, quinoa, giant squid, manufactured goods and zinc, to these new markets," she added.

APEC

In 2024, the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum members, gathered in Peru, successfully adopted two declarations during the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and the Joint Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and Women, aimed at implementing concrete actions to promote gender equality and women's empowerment through trade, expand trade opportunities for SMEs, and foster greater inclusive economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region.
