APEC Peru 2024: All you need to know about this economic forum

For the third time, Peru will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum Leaders' Summit to be held in November 2024.

Find out all the details about this important international event, whose preparatory meetings have already begun.

On November 17, 2023, in San Francisco, represented by the President of the Republic Dina Boluarte, Peru received the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Presidency for 2024 from U.S. President Joe Biden.

During said ceremony, the Head of State invited the other member economies to visit the South American country

"We want to wait for each one of you next year to honor us with your presence," she expressed.


Thus, the handover of the Pro-Tempore Presidency of this important economic forum is a sign of trust and recognition of Peru's leadership in the development of the thematic agenda of the main economic cooperation body in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes 21 economies.

APEC 2024 Agenda

The APEC 2024 forum is expected to develop an agenda, with an inclusive and sustainable approach that fosters the empowerment of vulnerable economic actors, addressing issues such as trade, investment for inclusive growth, innovation to promote the transition to formal and global economy, as well as sustainable growth for resilient development.

Likewise, Peru will implement the 'APEC Ciudadano Perú 2024' (APEC for the People) initiative, to bring this important forum’s benefits closer to civil society through technological, academic, cultural, as well as sporting initiatives and events, among others.

In this regard, Foreign Affairs Ministry's Senior Official for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum Renato Reyes Tagle explained that this program will generate spaces for leaders of organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) or the World Bank to get close to students, micro-entrepreneurs, unions, among other members of civil society.

Host cities

According to information provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this important event will take place in the cities of Lima, Urubamba (Cusco region), Arequipa, Trujillo, and Pucallpa, which will host cooperation meetings among APEC member nations.

21 leading economies 

APEC is made up of: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.

Together, they account for 62% of world's GDP, 48% of global trade in goods and services, plus 38% of the planet's population.
