A total of 9,066 young Peruvian immigrants who have lived in the United States since they were children will be subject to deportation as the Trump administration announced the end of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

This was pointed out by Andean Parliament legislator Mario Zuñiga, who recalled DACA was created in 2012 by the Obama administration in a bid to shield young undocumented immigrants from deportation.

According to Zuñiga, recipients with a permit set to expire between September 5, 2017, and March 5, 2018, might apply for a two-year renewal.

After that, all "dreamers" whose two-year protections expire could be subject to deportation.

"The shutdown of the DACA program is not the right decision. 97% of beneficiaries are employed or enrolled in an education program, 69% have gotten better-paying jobs, 65% have purchased their first car, and 16% have bought their first house," said the legislator.

Citing figures from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Zuñiga reported that of the 787,580 individuals approved for DACA, 622,000 are from Mexico, thus accounting for 79% of the total.

As stated by Peruvian Andean Parliament representative, Peru comes in fifth place when it comes to the number of beneficiaries.
