Peru and South Korea strengthen defense ties at industrial cooperation symposium

The first Peru-South Korea Symposium on Defense Industry Cooperation took place on Thursday, with the aim of strengthening cooperation relationship in the defense industry between both countries.

This event was organized by the South Korean Embassy in Peru, with the support of the Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency and Peru's Defense Ministry (MINDEF).

On behalf of Defense Minister Walter Astudillo, Peruvian Deputy Defense Resources Minister Adolfo Herrera Orlandini inaugurated this event. It was held at the Center for Higher National Studies (CAEN) in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

It also saw the presence of South Korean Ambassador Jong-uk ChoiPeruvian Navy Chief of Staff, Vice-Admiral Cesar Colunge Pinto; general officers; admirals; MINDEF officials; and the diplomatic corps from the Republic of Korea.

"The defense industry is not only essential for acquiring and maintaining military capabilities but also a strategic component of the national industry," Herrera Orlandini stated.

"Aware of this, the Ministry of Defense is fostering the formulation and approval of the National Multisector Policy for Strengthening the Defense Industry in Peru, with the aim of establishing objectives and providing guidelines for the development of the national industry," he added.

In turn, Material Resources Director General Paul Vera Delzo spoke about the sector's role in strengthening Peru's defense industry. He pointed out that this process is an arduous path, full of challenges and opportunities.

Representing Peru's defense industry, companies attached to Mindef participated in the event. These included: Peru's Navy Industrial Services (SIMA); the Army Weapons and Ammunition Factory (FAME); and the Maintenance Service of Peru (SEMAN Peru), which presented their work capabilities and business prospects.

On behalf of the foreign delegation, the following participated: the deputy director of Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA); the representative from Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT); the regional manager for Latin America of STX Company; the director of LIG Nex1 company; and the team leader of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. LT D.
