The Peruvian Government expressed its concern and strongly condemned the acts of repression against the opposition in Venezuela. It also demanded unrestricted respect for freedom of expression and political participation of the Venezuelan people.
"The Government of Peru demands unrestricted respect for freedom of expression and political participation of Venezuelans, and calls for the immediate release of all persons arbitrarily detained," reads a statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic on Thursday evening.
The communiqué mentions the increase and severity of reports of acts of repression, persecution, arbitrary detentions, and abductions against members of the democratic opposition and their families by the Venezuelan regime.
Thus, Peru joined other countries in condemning the arrest of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado after her reappearance at one of the demonstrations organized against Nicolas Maduro's inauguration as president, scheduled for this Friday.
