Peruvian President Ollanta Humala inaugurated the new 27 de Enero Convention Center, considered to be the most modern in Latin America and the venue of the most important international meetings starting this year.
Upon arrival, the Head of State and ministers toured the facilities, as he did last night when he verified the progress of the works.
The building will become a venue for major international events in the region, due to its infrastructure, technological equipping and capacity to house 9,950 people at a time throughout 18 rooms.
The project site area is 10,676 sq. m; while the estimated total built-up area is 84,700 sq. m, of which 35,000 will be used for parking and the rest for administrative support, circulation and services.
The Lima Convention Center is located in the metropolitan area called Cultural Center of the Nation in the district of San Borja.
The venue has been designed to host the 2015 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in October. It also aims to become an international benchmark and be considered the country's quintessential Convention Center.
The project was worth S/.500 million (about US$156.25 million). It was named after 27 de Enero (January 27), also known as the Maritime Sovereignty Day, on which The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a ruling that concluded an international dispute between Peru and Chile by awarding Peru some 50,000 square kilometers of maritime rights.
Mr. Humala was accompanied by Ministers of Housing, Milton von Hesse; Economy and Finance, Alonso Segura; Prime Minister, Pedro Cateriano and San Borja district Mayor Marco Alvarez.
