Peru's Justice and Human Rights Minister Maria Soledad Perez Tello on Tuesday held a meeting with Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) at the United States Department of State.
In this respect, the government official explained the main challenges facing Peru's justice field, as well as the underlying principles of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's administration.
On the other hand,
Ambassador Brownfield highlighted the excellent relations between Peru and his country, as well as bilateral cooperation achievements in terms of fighting drugs, ensuring public security and law enforcement.
Describing Peru as a "partner, ally and friend" of the United States in this endeavor, the INL representative offered his country's further support in areas prioritized by the Andean nation.
He particularly underlined the Peruvian Government's ongoing efforts to tackle corruption and criminal impunity, as well as drug-trafficking, terrorism and organized crime.
Similarly, Ambassador Brownfield highlighted the work of Peru's National Agreement for Justice, an inter-institutional initiative to reinforce the national justice system, enhance justice services and better combat corruption.
The audience also saw the presence of INL Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary
Luis Arreaga and Peruvian Ambassador to the U.S. Carlos Pareja.
In this vein, she stressed the need to expedite the nearly-forty extradition cases still pending resolution by the U.S. Justice system.
