The United Kingdom welcomed the appointment of Francisco Sagasti as the new President of Peru and confirmed it will continue to support Peru's sustainable social and economic development.

"The United Kingdom welcomes the appointment of Francisco Sagasti as President of Peru to lead the country through a free and fair electoral process in April, and a democratic transition in July 2021," according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the British Embassy in Lima.

Similarly, the UK sent its deepest condolences to the families of Inti Sotelo and Jack Bryan Pintado, who were killed during protests.

"Our thoughts are with their families and with all those injured during the protests," the document reads.

Likewise, according to the release, the UK remains concerned by reports of serious human rights violations committed during recent protests and welcomes the steps that have been taken to open investigations.

"We will be following this process closely," the statement said.

"The UK will continue to work to develop the strong relationship between our two countries and to support Peru's continued sustainable social and economic development," it added.

Francisco Sagasti has become President of the Republic until July 28, 2021. He replaces resigning Manuel Merino, who stepped down last Sunday —after less than one week in office and amid major protests.
