The Peruvian higher education sector has seen its share of programs —performing well enough to be globally-ranked— increase by 50% year-on-year, according to the eleventh edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The 2021 installment of QS's global university performance comparison offers independent data on the performance of 18 departments at 7 of Peru's universities, across 51 academic disciplines.

This is an increase of 6 year-on-year, with only 12 Peruvian university departments ranked in last year's edition.

QS also finds that Peru performs most strongly in QS's Business & Management Studies and Medicine rankings: three (3) Peruvian universities are featured in each table, and Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP) has entered the top 250 for Business & Management.

PUCP is also home to Peru's two highest-ranked programs: its Modern Languages program places 98th globally, while its Archaeology course has entered the top-100 (51-100 band).

"The 2021 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject indicates that Peruvian universities have begun to take consistently positive progressive steps towards global recognition. In particular, they are building a stronger ecosystem for education in medicine and business," QS Spokesperson Jack Moran said.

"With last year stressing the importance of a strong health infrastructure, and QS data expressing the enduring value of the skills offered in a business and management degree, these results augur well for Peruvian higher education," he added.

Global Highlights

Globally speaking, Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are the strongest-performing institutions across the exercise, ranking number-one in twelve subjects.

For its part, the United Kingdom's higher education sector remains resilient. 13 of the 51 subject tables are topped by a British university, with the University of Oxford leading five of those 13.

Meanwhile, Chinese higher education continues to reach new heights, with the sector attaining a record number of programs now achieving a top-50 rank.

QS Rankings

The rankings —compiled by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds— provide independent comparative analysis on the performance of 13,883 individual university programs, taken by students at 1,440 universities, which can be found in 85 locations across the world, across 51 academic disciplines and five broad Faculty Areas.

They are part of the annual QS World University Rankings portfolio, which was consulted over 147 million times in 2020, and covered 98,000 times by media and institutions.
