Peruvian President Francisco Sagasti on Thursday announced that France will be in charge of constructing the new Carretera Central (Central Highway) under a government-to-government (G2G) model, which entails an investment of S/11.571 billion (around US$3.1 billion).

"Following a rigorous selection process at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the State of France has been chosen to implement the project. The administrative work will commence after the selection process. We hope we can speed it up to start as soon as possible," he said.

The Head of State explained that the Central Highway will be a four-lane freeway with comfortable and safe curves. It will include tunnels totaling 30 km in length to avoid high altitude and facilitate the movement of vehicles.

The highway will extend from Cieneguilla to La Oroya, passing through Huaycan, Santiago de Tuna, and Yuracmayo, thus improving the capacity to move people and goods to and from the center and east of the country.

Moreover, he said the Government is considering to carry out studies for the construction of a road along Chillon River, which will be a third access road to reach the center of the country.

"As part of the efforts to address the pandemic, as everyone knows, the Government is trying to maintain the difficult balance between protecting health and the economy; but the country's development does not stop, and the new Central Highway's construction is the best proof of that," Mr. Sagasti pointed out.

The Peruvian leader affirmed that such road will be inaugurated by the new President who will be elected during the general elections scheduled for April 11.
