Peru-Turkey Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations are in early stages, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Rogers Valencia informed Thursday.
"This is a long-term negotiation, and it's at an early stage," he told Andina news Agency when asked about the matter.
Turkey is currently going through an economic and financial crisis, in addition to growing
trade tensions with the United States —due to a tariff escalation implemented by the North American country.
Remarks were made during the 2nd Tourism Forum: "Air connectivity as an engine of development in Peru," organized by Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).
Exports to Turkey
Peru's total
shipments to Turkey amounted to US$40.03 million in the first half of 2018, thus expanding 115.9% compared to the same period in 2017 (US$18.54 million), the Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) informed.
Regarding Inca sales to the European country,
traditional shipments stood out, reaching US$30.19 million in Jan-Jun 2018 (+281.3%), it pointed out.
Economic sectors
Peru's
mining exports to Turkey amounted to US$28.19 million in the first half of the current year, a 387.7% increase from the similar term in 2017 (US$5.78 million).
