Peru's safe tourism strategy wins award in Spain

12:28 | Madrid (Spain), Jan. 21.

The "Safe Tourism" national strategy —developed by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur)— has received the Travellers Awards prize in Spain for its transcendence while seeking to ensure a safe travel experience for tourists visiting Peru.

The Spanish media outlet Periodista Digital bestowed the award, which was handed over to Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Edgar Vasquez, who is in Madrid to attend FITUR 2020 —the major tourism event in the above-mentioned country— along with 20 Peruvian exhibitors.

Minister Vasquez thanked for the award and remarked —in a brief speech— that 2019 was a good year for Peru in terms of international recognition.

In addition, the World Travel Awards (WTA), known as the Oscars of the travel industry, named Peru as the World's Leading Culinary Destination (for the 8th consecutive year) and the World's Leading Cultural Destination.

Similarly, Machu Picchu was named —for the third time in a row— the World's Leading Tourist Attraction.

"Besides, various regions in Peru have been regarded as must-see travel destinations in 2020, as is the case of Arequipa, Lima, and Cusco," he underscored.

As for the "Safe Tourism" strategy, the cabinet member said that its launch —in July 2019— was a move to combat informality and insecurity in the tourism sector.
