The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Thursday urged citizens not to foster divisions that could destroy the homeland or to raise their hands and fists against Peruvian brothers and sisters who think differently.

"Our real enemies —whom we can only defeat if we stick together— are intolerance, discrimination, racism, corruption, and violence in all its forms," he remarked.

During his participation in the Inti Raymi ceremony held at Sacsayhuaman, in Cusco region, the Head of State affirmed that history provides a new opportunity for Peruvians during the Bicentennial observance.

"Only by making up with one another, coming together in fellowship as well as in open and sincere dialogue, we can make good use of our differences, which are insignificant compared to our potential," he said.

Mr. Sagasti pointed out that in order to start putting aside discord, resentment, and suspicion, people need to identify their own prejudices when judging others' motivations and to accept that they are not always right since there are different yet valid points of view.

"Let us remove the 'outdated scaffolding' that poisons minds and braces the facades of differences, which prevent us from recognizing that Peru is a beautiful project under construction," he said.

At the end of his speech, the President conducted a symbolic handover of the Shield of Cusco (Echenique Disc), which was recently returned by the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in the United States.
