Peru's President: Government works to assist citizens affected by strong earthquake

The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Wednesday affirmed that his administration is working on the corresponding actions to attend to the people affected by a strong earthquake that occurred in Lima last night.

Via social media, the Head of State reported that the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) chief is in Mala district (Cañete province, Lima region) carrying out coordination with local authorities to supervise and verify the damage.

For its part, a team from the Housing Ministry will assess the damage and make itself available to the mayor of Mala with the aim of providing the necessary care and support to the victims, the top official added.

A magnitude 6 earthquake occurred last night, minutes before 10 p.m. in Lima. The epicenter was located in Mala district, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) reported.

The earthquake caused alarm in the population and some landslides from the Costa Verde cliffs in Lima Metropolitan Area. In addition, it affected some houses by causing material damage.

A new earthquake of magnitude 4.8 was registered this morning and was felt in the capital city.

The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) reported that the earthquake was registered at 7:02 a.m. (local time) with a depth of 42 kilometers.

The epicenter was located on the Peruvian coast, 16 kilometers southwest of the town of Chilca, a district of the same name in Cañete province, 65 km south of the capital city of Lima.
