Peru's Defense Min: Letters against rule of law submitted to Public Ministry

Defense Minister Nuria Esparch reported that the letter from a group of retired Armed Force officers —who were intending to incite members of the Army, Air Force, and Navy to violate the rule of law— has been submitted to the Public Ministry for investigation purposes.

In this sense, the high-ranking official mentioned that the Armed Forces are not a deliberative body, adding that efforts are being undertaken to maintain absolute neutrality on the electoral process.

"We live in democracy, and we must respect the results," she said in remarks to Salvese Quien Pueda online interview show on Friday night.

Likewise, the minister indicated that two letters were received this week; one signed by retired general commanders.

The Cabinet member explained that the reason for criticism is that military symbols were used during electoral times, which could be mistaken for a communiqué from the Armed Forces.

"The other letter, which was signed by almost 1,500 retired military officers, urges them not to recognize one of the (presidential) candidates whom they, apparently, do not like. This letter has already been submitted to the Public Ministry, and they will determine the actions," she added.

Furthermore, the Government official affirmed that she had conversations with high commands of the Armed Forces concerning absolute respect for the Constitution.

"The Armed Forces work for the Peruvian State, and it will have a future male or female president who will be respected. A coup in the region at this moment is untenable (…)," Esparch stressed.
