13:28 | Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios region), Jun. 21.

The U.S. Embassy in Peru has donated at least 2,456 books and 800 backpacks filled with school supplies —valued at US$60,000— to support education in rainforest Madre de Dios region.

The aid is aimed at school students in Tambopata and Manu provinces.

To that end, Alberto Rodriguez, head of the Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section at the U.S. Embassy in Peru, headed to Puerto Maldonado on Wednesday.

The donation was funded by the U.S. Southern Command's Humanitarian Assistance Program

Madre de Dios Region Governor Luis Hidalgo, lawmaker Modesto Figueroa, Tambopata Local Education Management Unit Director Ruth Zavaleta, and other authorities attended the handover ceremony.

According to Rodriguez, this donation seeks to give young people the educational tools to change their lives.

"Education is the key to development and a better future. I thank teachers for their performance and perseverance to educate future generations in values. I recognize the efforts of parents to ensure their children attend school, get well educated, and are in good health," he said.

Since 2006, the U.S. Department of Defense's Southern Command has invested over US$44 million in 277 projects across Peru through its Humanitarian Assistance Program.

Not long ago, on June 6, U.S. Ambassador to Peru Krishna Urs visited Abraham Ronald Poma School in Lima's Surco district to donate more than S/166,000 (US$49,700) in school supplies, including 300 backpacks and 16,000 school kits, for students in 59 primary schools across Lima Metropolitan area.
