Peru: UNESCO Blue Shield placed at San Francisco Convent in Arequipa

14:06 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), May. 16.

The Provincial Municipality of Arequipa on Thursday placed a UNESCO Blue Shield distinctive emblem in the Convent of San Francisco to enable its identification and protection, as is the case of other monuments in the Historic Center —recognized as cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO.

Arequipa Historic Center Manager William Palomino explained that —in Latin America— only Guatemala and Peru are authorized to place blue shields in their historic monuments.

In the case of Arequipa, he said, the emblem will be used in 301 properties within its Historic Center, including large old houses, temples, convents, and public spaces that need to be conserved and protected.

The first Blue Shield was placed at Bolognesi Bridge on January 31, and the sixth was given this morning to the Convent of San Francisco —located three blocks away from the so-called White City's Main Square, whose construction dates back to the 17th century.

The Blue Shield is an international symbol recognized by UNESCO that is used to identify cultural property whose heritage needs to be conserved and protected in times of armed conflicts, disasters, and public works.

In addition to this protective symbol, QR codes will be placed on the aforementioned historic monuments. The aim is to tell tourists and locals the history of the large old houses, temples, streets, and parks.
