Peru to celebrate 2019 Pukllay Carnival

00:05 | Andahuaylas (Apurimac region), Feb. 20.

The southern Andean city of Andahuaylas —where the 17th edition of Pukllay Carnival will be held— currently gets ready to receive dozens of delegations from various regions, which will show their traditions through music and dances that characterize the cultural wealth of Peru.

This "Carnival of all Bloods" will take place on March 20-23 and showcase the Andean culture's identity, which has been enriched throughout the years —thanks to miscegenation— as well as enables the reunion between countryside and city.

Andahuaylas' ancestral culture endures over time and expresses itself in this event, considered the greatest in the southern area of the nation.

Pukllay is a Quechua word for "game" and represents a festivity of gratitude towards nature —in general— as well as to the Apus (guardian deities) and the Pachamama (Mother Earth).

An impressive parade is organized for this carnival, in which regional delegations march. Plus, houses are decorated with balloons and garland.

Furthermore, the local Chankas Stadium becomes the epicenter of this rural celebration, where delegations from all provinces, districts, and population centers converge in order to compete and show the best of their arts and traditions.
