Peruvian engineering students will participate in the Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) Bowling Ball Competition, which is set to take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States on March 25.
The event will bring together the best civil engineering programs' representatives from 40 countries.
The national delegation is composed of
National University of Engineering (UNI) students Bryan Valderrama and Miguel Yataco, who managed to build a lightweight and resistant concrete sphere with energy dissipation capacity.
The construction of said structure took about three months.
According to team advisors Manuel Gutarra and Juan Vega, the great challenge of this competition is to get a concrete mix as light and resistant as possible.
"The most difficult thing is to comply with all the contest's requirements since it is necessary to balance many properties of concrete, like fluidity, strength, and energy dissipation capacity," Gutarra told Andina news agency.
About the Competition
The objective of this competition is to demonstrate the effect of fibers reinforcing concrete, to gain experience in forming and fabricating a fiber-reinforced concrete element, and to encourage creativity in engineering design and analysis.
