Peru has signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on the margins of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 72) held in New York City.

The signing constitutes an essential step towards nuclear disarmament and embodies a rule of international law to guarantee that nuclear weapons are never used again under any circumstances.

It also provides a legally binding framework for the irreversible, verifiable, and transparent elimination and destruction of nuclear weapons.

"In essence, this instrument upholds the ban on the development, production, manufacturing, transfer, possession, and stockpile of nuclear weapons, as well as the explicit prohibition on the use or threat to use them," Peru's Foreign Affairs Ministry stated.

This treaty is the result of negotiations involving all State Parties, international organizations, and civil society representatives.

Its approval demonstrates the commitment shown by the different delegations.

This way, Peru supports the programmatic and consensual elimination of nuclear weapons.

"Given the humanitarian consequences resulting from their use, it [Peru] stands for the establishment of nuclear-weapon-free zones, which would be an important step towards achieving peace in conflict regions," the ministry said.

As is known, Peru will become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the 2018-2019 period.
