Peru grabbed five medals at the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2018), thus ranking among the world's top countries in this discipline.
The
national delegation was composed of high-school students: Diego Lazaro (silver), Joseph Altamirano (silver), Monica Martinez (bronze), Daniel Benavides (bronze), Anthony Yataco (bronze), and Renzo Balcazar (honorable mention).
With this result, Peru ranked second among Ibero-American countries, only behind Brazil. In this sense, the Inca nation managed to defeat Mexico, Spain, Chile, Portugal, and Argentina.
Globally speaking, Peru also defeated Finland and Denmark, among other countries.
"Peru maintains its
good performance at the IMO (...) thanks to teamwork, perseverance, and the passion for
study of our pupils and teachers," Saco Oliveros High School's Talent Program Head Alfredo Chavez pointed out.
Deemed as the world's most important math competition,
IMO 2018 saw the participation of 594 students from 107 countries.
Although the contest is already over, related activities will run thru July 14.
About
The first IMO was held in 1959 —also in
Romania— and brought together students from 7 countries.
Over the years, this Olympiad has become a large international competition with participants from more than 100 countries around the world.
