Peru receives supplies for COVID-19 molecular detection from PAHO

11:50 | Lima, Jul. 3.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) received a donation of supplies to conduct molecular detection of COVID-19 —consisting of 19 sets of primers and probes— from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the sector's office reported.

Health Minister Victor Zamora received the donation from PAHO Representative in Peru Ruben Mayorga, who said the material will ensure continuity of the detection and diagnosis of COVID-19 in the context of response to the pandemic.

"Today, health unites us more than ever. We are launching primary care again. This week, we have joined the solidarity of Germany, which deployed experts to support us. Now, we are doing the same by strengthening laboratory-based surveillance thanks to PAHO," the Minsa head reported.

Zamora indicated that, in this new phase of economic reopening, Minsa will open 1,250 COVID-9 spaces to collect samples across the country, where swabbing will take place and —eventually— positive cases will begin treatment, thus reinforcing the epidemiological surveillance.

"The swab samples will be sent to the 13 molecular biology laboratories, which are equipped with the necessary technology and supplies to process them," the minister explained.

"These 1,250 spaces will rely on doctors, nurses, and laboratory technicians so that they can test our compatriots," he added.

In addition, the high-ranking official highlighted that the National Health Institute (INS), the national network of laboratories, and primary health care facilities play a fundamental role in this surveillance process in order to test and process the results using cutting-edge technology to contain the disease.
