Peru President: Responsible voting to strengthen democracy, institutions

13:13 | Lima, Jan. 22.

Casting a responsible vote will lead to strengthening democracy and institutions, said the President of the Republic, Martin Vizcarra, who called on all Peruvians to go to the polls this Sunday with the aim of electing Congress members for the 2020-2021 term at the extraordinary parliamentary elections.

In a message posted on social media on Wednesday, the Head of State urged voters to make a decision responsibly and thinking about Peru.

"The Congress (members) to be elected by all Peruvians —despite their short term in office— will fulfill an important task both with the pending political and judicial reform, as well as in terms of legislation to continue boosting the development of the country," he expressed.

The top official went on to add that the act of electing is a citizen right and a civic responsibility to the country. Thus, he requested Peruvians to evaluate the resumes and proposals of candidates, as well as of political parties in order to cast a responsible vote.

"Peru is experiencing a process of changes and decisions that will be important for our future and the future of our children," he stated.

24,799,384 Peruvian citizens are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections both in their home country and from abroad.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
