Peru President: Political problems pass by, works stay on

12:04 | La Matanza (Piura region), Aug. 9.

Political problems pass by, but works remain in the heart of the people, Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra said on Friday while remarking he will continue working —in coordination with sub-national governments— for peoples' development.

As is known, Coastal El Niño phenomenon hit Peru in 2017. Said weather event was characterized by heavy rains, landslides, and floods, which destroyed infrastructure and crops, leaving many citizens homeless.

His remarks were made during the inauguration of local streets and roads across La Matanza district in northern Piura region.

The Head of State asserted that the Executive Branch put its trust in regional and local governments to move forward in reconstruction more efficiently.

As a result, the Central Government executed 30% of the budget in reconstruction during the first seven months of the year, while budget execution at the municipal level increased to 40% in the same period.

"This means municipal governments are doing their job, are identified with the population's needs, and have started to work," he added.

As for the confidence placed in sub-national governments, Mr. Vizcarra claimed that over S/100,000 (about US$29,500) has been transferred to the Municipality of Morropon in order to implement reconstruction projects.

He went on to say his administration is working along with Piura Region Government on a comprehensive project to prevent future El Niño weather events.

"The aim is to make use of the huge amount of water available in Piura, which has not yet been exploited," he stated.
