Peru: President, new PM lead new Council of Ministers session

14:12 | Lima, Aug. 6.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra and recently sworn-in Prime Minister Walter Martos currently lead a new session of the Council of Ministers at the Government Palace in Lima.

Before the work meeting began, the Head of State delivered an address to the nation.

The statesman also said that the priority of today's session is to continue fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peru Pact

Lastly, Mr. Vizcarra indicated that he will present five points of understanding to Congress, which are expected to be discussed at the first Peru Pact meeting taking place in the coming days.

"I am sure that the Peru Pact will allow us to reach the necessary consensus in order to lay the foundations for the bicentennial to endow politics with life so that it is at the service of citizens today and forever," he added.

The Pact meeting will be aimed at:
  1. Building a unified health system that guarantees the universal provision of this service for Peruvians in an efficient, transparent and equal manner.
  2. Guaranteeing educational quality by eliminating the gap between urban and rural education, with accessibility to virtual education at all levels for public and private education under adequate State regulation.
  3. Promoting sustainable economic growth and investments, in addition to proposing policies that enhance the State's capacity needed to detect and dismantle anti-competitive practices. The social market economy needs to benefit citizens and not just some companies.
  4. The continuity of political and justice system reforms in order to make progress in the democratization of the country and in the fight against corruption.
  5. The urgent fight against poverty and extreme poverty that implies closing —once and for all— historical social gaps and making progress in the construction of a more just and equitable country.
