Peru President highlights Ledesma's election as Constitutional Court Chairwoman

14:37 | Jaen (Cajamarca region), Dec. 3.

The President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed that the election of Marianella Ledesma as Chairwoman of the Constitutional Court (TC) demonstrates a change in the mentality of Peruvians.

As is known, lawyer Ledesma was chosen to become Chair of the Constitutional Court (TC) of Peru for the next two years. She will assume this position on January 3, 2020.

"I want to highlight that yesterday the first female magistrate, who will preside over the Constitutional Court, was elected. That shows a change in the mentality we have, because not only Ledesma's professional skills are recognized, but also her status as a woman," he said in this sense.

Election

Ledesma will be the first woman to hold the presidency of the highest constitutional body.

She obtained four votes in favor versus the three received by Eloy Espinosa-Saldaña.

Ledesma will lead the TC, and Augusto Ferrero Costa will be in charge of the Vice-Chairmanship.

She is the second woman to be part of the TC after Delia Revoredo.
