Peru President: Early general elections are only way out of political entrapment

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra has affirmed the early general elections by 2020 are the only way out of the current political entrapment and urged lawmakers to listen to the people, as well as to act in accordance with their conscience.

According to the Head of State, the constitutional reform proposal —submitted by the Executive to the Legislative Branch— matches citizens' complaints and demands for alternatives aimed at bringing the Inca country into a better situation.

Likewise, the top official indicated he governs in a clear and firm manner in order to improve all Peruvians' quality of life, "but we believe the political entrapment —we are currently in— requires us to make decisions such as proposing early general elections one year in advance."

Furthermore, the statesman mentioned the delays concerning the approval of the early elections bill announced on July 28 during his Address to the Nation.

Therefore, President Vizcarra stated that if, this measure is not assessed, he will make use of constitutional mechanisms. Within this framework, he did not rule out introducing a new confidence motion to Congress.

However, the Head of State said he trusts lawmakers will change their attitude —towards the reform proposal— for a more selfless one.

Remarks were made to the latest issue of Hildebrandt en sus Trece magazine released on Friday.
