Peru President disagrees with preventive detention order for policeman

16:45 | Lima, Jan. 18.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday expressed his total disagreement with a seven-month preventive detention order against a Police Noncommissioned Officer who took down a criminal in northern Piura region.

"We want independent judges and prosecutors, but who make the right decisions (…)," the Head of State expressed.

Likewise, the top official disapproved said measure, since Noncommissioned Officer Elvis Miranda Rojas used his gun following the protocol established by the National Police.

"How could we empower the police to fight against crime, if the same system punishes the person who takes the risk of confronting delinquents," he added.

Furthermore, the statesman indicated they support all the actions taken by the police institution to reverse this situation.

Ex-Judge Hinostroza

"And what is contradictory is that, while a brave policeman is given preventive detention, the Migrations official who let ex-Judge (Cesar) Hinostroza flee through the northern border has had her preventive detention lifted," President Vizcarra stressed.

In July 2018, investigate site IDL-Reporteros released audio recordings, which contained unethical conversations involving CNM members, judges, businesspeople, and politicians from the Inca country. The revelations prompted a scandal in the justice system.

Additionally, the Head of State pointed out this type of contradictions must be corrected with a justice administration system, which is honest and regains the trust of the Inca country's citizens.

Remarks were made during the swearing-in ceremony of the National Assembly of Regional Governments' (ANGR) new Board of Directors.
