Peru President advocates for disabled people's inclusion

13:18 | Lima, Oct. 16.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra called for an inclusive country with equal opportunities for all, with a view to achieving national development.

"Working together towards Peru means working for an inclusive country that treats all Peruvians on an equal footing," the statesman said Tuesday at a ceremony marking the National Day of Persons with Disabilities.

According to the Head of State, 10% of the population (more than 3 million) has a form of disability but they don't get the opportunities they deserve.

Out of the total, 1.7 million are female and 1.3 million are male who enjoy the same rights as the rest of Peruvian citizens.

"We have a huge task ahead of us, a change in attitude, in the way of thinking (…). This is Peruvians' real change, and authorities should set an example by being inclusive," Vizcarra said as he and First Lady Maribel Diaz took part in the event.

He referred to the lack of employment opportunities for persons with disabilities at ministries, stressing authorities should lead by example.

"Our first task is to open the doors, make a call, and provide opportunities," the President pointed out.

"The commitment involves a change in the Government's attitude so as to become a more inclusive society," he affirmed.
