Peru President: 2019 budget to increase teachers' pay

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Friday announced the 11% increase in the 2019 education budget will help improve teachers' salary, training investment, and granting of scholarships.

Remarks were made as he opened Sol Naciente School's new facilities in Lima's peripheral Carabayllo district.

The Head of State said these works confirm his Government's commitment to improving the quality of teaching across the Andean country.

Likewise, he stressed the need to allocate further resources to education, asserting its key role in peoples' development.

“The budget rise will boost teachers' salary from S/ 2,000 (US$605) to S/ 2,200 (US$666) (...),” he stated.

According to the high-ranking official, the spending plan for other sectors will increase by 5% to 6%, as against 11% for education.

In his speech, the statesman noted the Sol Naciente School's new infrastructure will enable children to study under better conditions.

The works entailed an investment of more than S/6 million (about US$1.8 million).

Following the inauguration, Vizcarra toured the school facilities to verify the functionality of its new infrastructure.

During the event, the Peruvian leader was joined by Education Minister Daniel Alfaro.
