Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on Saturday indicated that he will communicate to President Dina Boluarte what was indicated on the Civil Defense System report and by Tumbes regional authorities regarding the earthquake that hit the northern area earlier today.

In remarks to reporters, the Cabinet chief lamented the passing of a minor due to the seismic event.

Although its epicenter was Ecuador's Machala area, it has also caused damage in Tumbes. These consist of some collapsed homes, the high-ranking official said.

Yet he noted that, beyond this, there have been no damage of greater magnitude (on Peruvian soil).

The government's spokesman indicated that the power outage registered in said region was because the quake had knocked down electric poles. However, the service is being restored, he reported.

"We return to Lima with peace of mind because there is no more damage to lament in Tumbes," Otarola expressed.

Damage count

The Prime Minister indicated that President Dina Boluarte had asked officials to travel to said area to assess the damage.

The corresponding report will be handed over to the Head of State in the next few hours, he added.

This emerges from the meeting that the Cabinet chief and other State ministers held today with Tumbes Regional Emergency Operations Committee members.

In this sense, the Prime Minister asked Tumbes' population to remain calm.

Besides, he expressed his solidarity with the Ecuadorian population, who has been the most affected by said earthquake.
