08:00 | Lima, Feb. 20.

In January 2020, the total production of electricity nationwide —including Isolated Systems and the National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN)— was 4,956 gigawatt hour (GWh), up 2.4% compared to the same month last year (4,841 GWh).

This was highlighted in the report "Main Indicators of the Electrical Sector at the National Level," issued by Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem).

Regarding the energy generated according to the source, the hydroelectric plants at the national level in January achieved a production of 3,357 GWh, that is, 16% more than the figure recorded in the same month last year, due to increased availability of this resource.

Also, the use of solar resource registered an increase of 3%, while electricity generation using wind power grew 2%, both compared to January of the previous year.

According to the indicators published by the Minem’s Electricity General Directorate, energy production figures by geographical area, as of January 2020, show that around 80% of national production comes from central Peru (Lima, Huancavelica and Callao).

Meanwhile, 13% of electricity production was generated in the south of the country and 6% in the north; whereas 1.2% of this production comes from eastern Peru.
