Peru will host the NatGeo Race while respecting the environment for the second consecutive year, State-run National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) confirmed.
Under the said concept, carbon credits generated by REDD+ project developed in Sernanp-managed Tambopata National Reserve (Madre de Dios region) will be used to compensate carbon footprints.
Set to take place in Lima on September 11, the race features a 4K walk and an 8K run.
Events will start at the first block of Av. Pablo Carriquirry, in Lima's San Isidro district. Registration is available at Teleticket modules located inside Metro or Wong supermarkets.
Once again, the international channel bets on Peru's protected natural areas, offering participants an opportunity to preserve one of Madre de Dios region's natural treasures and prevent jungle deforestation.
As is known, NatGeo Race's 1st edition in Peru contributed to reforestation of 1,000 Tara trees in Lachay National Reserve.
REDD+ Projects
As strategy to preserve four natural protected areas, Peru develops REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) projects.
Tambopata National Reserve's initiative entails production of deforestation-free cocoa based on a 'payment for performance' model: farmers receive funding on the condition not to deforest. Instead, they restore 4,000 hectares of degraded land.
Tambopata's REDD+ project was granted the United Nations' Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activity Award during Paris 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) in 2015.
