The
Ministry of Education (Minedu) on Wednesday began the pilot project for the return to school under a blended learning model, in Lima Metropolitan Area, with the participation of one private educational institution out of the 16 that have been so far declared fit to reopen in the Peruvian capital.
The first educational institution to reopen is Cambridge College, a private school located in Lima's Chorrillos district.
It should be noted that this process has been underway in the rest of the country since April 19 this year, with the participation of more than 6,000 public and private schools, as well as more than 240,000 students at different levels of basic education.
Starting 8:00 a.m. (local time), the students entered the premises of the abovementioned school, which was equipped with portable hand-washing stations and an area for temperature checks.
According to Elisa Venegas, medium level coordinator at Cambridge College, the school has determined —upon agreement with parents— that minors will attend blended learning classes twice a week for four hours at a time during this first stage.
She went on to say that, in accordance with the agreement with the Ministry of Education, the new learning model will include two weeks of adaptation, which has been accepted by 97% of parents. The remaining 3% will keep their children in virtual classes on a full-time basis.
The second school that is ready to gradually reopen is Elizabeth Espejo de Marroquin, a public preschool institution located in Lima's Miraflores district. Its reopening is scheduled for Thursday, September 16, also under the blended learning format.
Hugo Reynaga, head of Alternative Intercultural Bilingual Basic Education and Educational Services in Rural Areas, told Andina news agency that 558 students will attend blended learning classes at said school.
Other 10 educational institutions, four public and six private, are expected to resume classes —under the same conditions— in the following weeks, once the observations on their implementation plans are lifted and they are granted the corresponding authorization issued by the
Local Education Management Unit (UGEL).
