Peru: Four lawmakers of dissolved Congress expected to enter Parliament

11:15 | Lima, Jan. 29.

Only four legislators of the dissolved Congress in Peru will enter Parliament, according to reports by the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) on the parliamentary elections held last Sunday.

Those lawmakers include Gino Costa and Alberto de Belaunde from Partido Morado, as well as Martires Lizana and Gilmer Trujillo from Fuerza Popular.

In total, 19 lawmakers of the dissolved Parliament ran for a seat in this new Legislature.

Those who failed to return are Mauricio Mulder (APRA); Rosa Bartra, Yeni Vilcatoma, Estelita Bustos, and Nelly Cuadros (Solidaridad Nacional); as well as Manuel Dammert (Juntos por el Peru).

The list also includes Juan Carlos Gonzales, Carlos Dominguez, Miguel Elias, and Mario Mantilla (Fuerza Popular); Juan Sheput, Salvador Heresi, and Janet Sanchez (Contigo); Luis Yika (Vamos Peru); and Alberto Quintanilla (Juntos por el Peru). The latter was excluded from the process.

In the case of these candidates, their respective political groups failed to pass the 5% threshold needed to secure parliamentary representation, as stipulated by the Organic Electoral Law.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.
