The former President of the Republic Martin Vizcarra (2018-2020) has confirmed that he accepted the invitation to run for Congress representing Somos Peru (We are Peru) party in the general elections scheduled for April 11, 2021.

In an interview with RPP TV and radio station, Vizcarra showed the letter issued by Somos Peru Chairwoman Rosa Li Sotelo, who had extended an invitation for him to lead the list of candidates for Parliament in Lima.

The former Head of State pledged that —if elected— he will completely reform the concept of parliamentary immunity, so that it is not used as impunity.

Likewise, Vizcarra seemed to be in favor of changing the Constitution.

The ex-president specified that the acceptance to become a Somos Peru candidate must still be formalized through a legal administrative procedure.

"We must be respectful of the regulations and formality. I am not a candidate yet, but I have the willingness to become one (...) we must wait for the deadlines set by law," he expressed.

Vizcarra claimed that —that so far— prosecutors have merely shown him the claims made by whistleblowers, but no evidence.
