Peru: EsSalud sees nearly 50% increase in hospitalizations of children with COVID-19

So far this month, some 856 children aged 0-11 years have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 at EsSalud health facilities, up by almost 50% compared to December 2021, when 599 hospital admissions were recorded in the same age group, the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) has reported.

To date, 311 children are hospitalized due to coronavirus, 15 of whom are fighting for their lives in an ICU bed, while 7 pediatric patients have died due to complications from the disease.

Meanwhile, more than 12,000 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 were reported among children aged 0-11 years during the first two weeks of January. 

The rebound of infections showed higher incidence in the 5-9 age group, with 5,175 children infected so far.

In addition to Lima and Callao, the increase was also observed in the regions of Ancash, Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huánuco, Ica, Junin, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Moquegua, Pasco, Piura, and Puno.

In view of this situation, EsSalud urged parents to get their children vaccinated against COVID-19.


On the first day of the vaccination drive, EsSalud managed to inoculate 4,616 children at vaccination centers in Lima and Callao.
