Defense Minister Nuria Esparch on Tuesday supervised the start of the vaccination against COVID-19 of retired Peruvian Navy personnel aged over 80, as well as of naval personnel's wives or widows.

"Today marks one year since the (first) confinement began. It is a very important day for older adults at the Navy and the Armed Forces in general," she expressed.

On this occasion, the Cabinet member announced that the vaccination of older adults from the Army and Air Force will begin on March 18.

The doses administered to Navy elders are part of the second batch (46,800 Pfizer doses) delivered by the Ministry of Health to the Armed Forces.

Everyone will be vaccinated

The Defense minister also pointed out that the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status' (Reniec) list is used for vaccination purposes, which guarantees that all citizens in Peru will be immunized —without any exception— with the vaccines that are arriving in the country every week.

For their part, foreign citizens —who are duly registered— will be vaccinated as well.

"Now that a greater amount (of vaccines) arrives, we will expand immunizations; without any doubt, all of our older adults, parents, and grandparents will be vaccinated in the coming weeks," she stressed.

Minister Esparch visited the Naval School in Lima joined by Navy General Commander Admiral Ricardo Menendez and the institution's Health Department Director Rear Admiral Mario Cacho.
