Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra on Wednesday visited the archaeological research project carried out in the atrium of La Soledad Church, located at San Francisco Small Square in the Peruvian capital Lima.

During his visit, Neyra was taken on a tour of the site, where he congratulated Prolima team members for the works they undertake.

At the site, the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, through Prolima, found the remains of La Soledad's primitive chapel, an underground crypt, the original pebble floor of the small square, and remains of the old parapet or perimeter fence that surrounded the San Francisco Convent.

The findings were made during the implementation of one of the three archaeological research projects carried out at Lima's Historic Center.

According to the municipality, this is a very important event, because this is the first time a discovery like this has been made at Lima's Historic Center in 15 years.

The abovementioned parapet was crowned with 24 crosses made of berenguela stones, which were brought from Bolivia at the end of the 17th century, quite a challenge and achievement at that time. A berenguela is an alabaster or translucent stone.

It should be noted that the discovery was made during the actions carried out as part of the implementation of the Master Plan to Recover the Historic Center of Lima.

The archaeological research project at San Francisco Small Square began in December 2019 but was stopped due to the state of national emergency declared in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
