Peru: Corporate travel to contribute to recovery of tourism sector

10:03 | Lima, Jul. 14.

Recent Government measures to resume interprovincial transport starting tomorrow and the reopening of restaurants starting on Monday provide better prospects for tourism, one of the sectors worst-hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) Head Carlos Canales noted that 10% of the progress made by this activity this year will be explained by corporate tourism.

This segment is mainly made up of business trips by executives, engineers, contractors, sales agents, and other professionals.

"They all need to travel to do business or close deals. Even more in this new post-COVID-19 phase," he told El Peruano official gazette.

Negative impact

Canales acknowledged that tourism is one of the most affected sectors by the pandemic around the world.

"In Peru, mitigation measures were implemented in a timely manner, but the coronavirus effects are severe," he expressed.

Regarding the economic reopening in phases, the Canatur official explained that some sectors have managed to overcome this situation thus resuming their activities. "We hope the same thing will happen soon with the tourism industry."
