During a plenary session, the Congress of the Republic approved —by majority vote— the reconsideration of bills 1897, 1918, among others, regarding the constitutional reform to bring general elections forward to 2023.

The reconsideration bill put forward by Arturo Alegria  —a legislator from Fuerza Popular (Popular Force) party — obtained 66 votes in favor, 49 against, and 6 abstentions.

After the approval, Constitution and Regulations Commission Chairman Hernando Guerra Garcia (Fuerza Popular) requested a fourth intermission to prepare a new substitute text agreed by parliamentary political parties.

"I think we can show our level of maturity, dialogue, and agreement to our fellow citizens, who expect so much that we can propose a way out. I would like to request —through you, the chair— an intermission," Guerra Garcia stated.

The legislator affirmed that the Board of Spokespersons will meet, and to this end, he has requested the participation of Constitution Commission Deputy Chairman Lady Camones (Alianza para el Progreso), and the secretary of said working group, Alejandro Cavero (Avanza Pais).

"First, (we will) listen to each parliamentary group separately and take some time to listen to their proposals; afterwards, we will try to reach an agreement on a substitute text," the lawmaker pointed out.

"To that end,  I ask you the chair for more time and the necessary facilities. Besides, I call on my colleagues for reflection and maturity to be able to find a way out for a country that is listening to us," he added.

After Guerra Garcia's participation, Congress Chairman Jose Williams decided to suspend the plenary session.
