The Peruvian Government on Friday congratulated Antonio Guterres over his appointment to serve as Secretary-General of the United Nations for a second term.

Via Twitter, the South American country recognized Guterres' leadership as head of the organization in times of crisis, such as the one the nation is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Peruvian Government shares his vision to "restore confidence and inspire hope.”

Likewise, it supports his ongoing reform efforts and initiatives for sustainable development, humanitarian assistance, peace and security, climate change, and fight against corruption, among others.

Portugal-born Guterres was appointed for a second five-year term on Friday by the 193-member UN General Assembly.

"I am deeply honoured and grateful for the trust placed in me to serve as the Secretary-General of the United Nations for a second term. Serving the UN is an immense privilege and a most noble duty," the 72-year-old dignitary wrote on Twitter.
