15:02 | Lima, Aug. 20.

Peru's Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) and China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (Mara) will sign an agreement enabling bilateral cooperation on the development of agricultural science and technology in order to improve the quality of Andean and Amazon seeds in the South American country.

The goal of this accord means boosting smart agriculture in Peru by utilizing technologies in accordance with the processes of national crop production systems.

Therefore, the sustainability, productivity, and competitiveness of small- and medium-scale of family farming producers are expected to increase.

For that reason, Peruvian Minister Fabiola Muñoz held a meeting with China's Department of International Cooperation Official Wang Jing.

In this sense, both authorities expressed their agreement on prioritizing research focused on providing healthy foods, such as quinoa and potato.

Later, research on products from the Amazon —like chestnuts—will be included as well.

Work agenda

The work agenda includes the visit of Chinese officials to the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation's (INIA) Agricultural Experimental Station – Andenes with the purpose of learning more about potatoes' production and research system.

During the meeting, the Asian Giant reaffirmed its willingness to promote the entry of Peruvian products with the aim of consolidating healthy consumption among its population.

Within this framework, it was agreed on to prioritize the compliance with formalities to sign Peruvian avocados access protocol to China.

The Chinese delegation's visit is the outcome of an invitation made by Minister Muñoz during her participation at the International Potato Fair held in Beijing last June.
